United’s Guide to Summer Transfers

After losing out the BPL title in the last minute of the match, United have endured a trophy less season after 2004/05. This won’t stop Sir Alex Ferguson to take a dig in the market and sign some crucial signings. Here are a few possible players who can make a significant impact on the proceedings at Old Trafford.

Leighton Baines ( Left back at Everton, aged 27) – After a dip in Evra’s performance, Ferguson is contemplating to make a bid for Baines. Daily Mail suggests that a bid of 10 million GBP is good enough to test Everton’s resolve. It is highly unlikely that he would come to Old Trafford as an understudy to Evra but his arrival would mean an end to illustrious career of Evra.

Nathaniel Clyne ( Right back at Crystal Palace, aged 21) – A hugely talented youngster who rose through the ranks at Crystal Palace, has been tracked for years by Ferguson. Should he reject contract extension, Ferguson will get his man. At 21, he’s already displayed a lot of maturity, playing with the big boys and even made it to the PFA team of the year (Championship). According to Daily Mail reports, If United sign Clyne, they would have to pay training compensation to Eagles.

Jan Verthogen (Centre back at Ajax Amsterdam, aged 25) – Arguably the best defender in Netherlands at the moment. According to Daily Mail, United are pondering of a move to the 8 million GBP defender who’s into his last year at Ajax. Could be an ideal replacement for Rio Ferdinand, who’s on the wrong side of 30’s. His signing would enhance the fight for the coveted place in the starting lineup among Jones, Evans and Smalling.

Robert Lewandowski ( Striker at Borussia Dortmund, aged 23) – The Pole has been terrific in front of the goal, scoring 30 goals in 46 appearances. Sir Alex Ferguson and his assistant Mike Phelan made a check on Lewandowski at DFB Pokal final in Berlin. And if the reports from Metro are to be believed, a bid in excess of 15 million GBP is enough to convince Dortmund to sell their prized marksman, who’s agent has revealed that the contract offered by Dortmund was in sufficient and United are interested in his services.

Nicolás Gaitán (Attacking Midfielder / Winger at S.L.Benfica, aged 24)
- The talented Argentine who has caught everyone’s attention with exceptional performances against the likes of United and Chelsea. It will be interesting to see where he would play under Ferguson’s team. An attacking midfielder who can slide down the left wing with ease and also has a great eye for goal. According to Telegraph, United are plotting a 20 Million GBP plus Fabio Da Silva and Federico Macheda, who’s days at Old Trafford are numbered.

Christian Eriksen (Attacking Midfielder at Ajax Amsterdam, aged 20) - Despite not being English (or even Spanish) Ajax's Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen is wanted by both Manchester United and Manchester City. According to Guardian, Sir Alex Ferguson has put the 19-year-old at the top of his wanted list, which is probably precisely why Roberto Mancini wants him too. It will take £20m to prize the 19-year-old from Ajax's grasp

Shinji Kagawa (Attacking Midfielder / Winger at Borussia Dortmund, aged 23) – Shinji Kagawa heads the potential list of recruits at Old Trafford as Red Devils seek to strengthen their side and wrestle the premiership title away from neighbors City. Kagawa scored 13 goals in 31 league games as Dortmund won the Bundesliga from Bayern by eight points. He would fit the profile currently adhered to by United of a young player who would improve and not cost a premium price – with him costing between £15m to £20m.

Lucas Moura (Attacking Midfielder at Sao Paolo, aged 19) - Sao Paolo have set a hefty price tag believed to be in the region of €50 million on their top talent Lucas Moura, Metro reveals. Lucas Moura is, after Neymar, the hottest up-and-coming player in world football at the moment. Lucas has a contract that runs until 2015 and has a release clause of €80 million, Sao Paolo are in no rush to sell the youngster.

Javi Martinez (Defensive Midfielder at Athletic Bilbao, aged 23)
– Sir Alex Ferguson had a first check on the Basque player when both the sides met in Europa League. So impressed was Ferguson that he feels that a £24 million is enough to do business. Recently, the player had suggested that he’s not worth the £ 34 million that the club values him. A top priority for Ferguson in the midfield, given his brilliant performances this season where Bilbao reached the finals of Copa Del Rey as well as Europa League.

Moussa Dembélé (Central Midfielder at Fulham, aged 24) – The Belgian attacking midfielder who has been deployed as a deep lying midfielder by Martin Jol, has found consistency and helped Fulham finish as high as 9th in EPL. Considered as many as a ready made replacement for Paul Scholes who just prolonged his career another year, after abandoning retirement. Reports from Dailymail suggest that a bid of £10 M is good enough to make Jol sell his prized asset. United need to sign him as a cover for Darren Fletcher who has been out for most of the season due to long-term illness and Tom Cleverley, who had been prone to injury problems through out the current season.

Chronicles of Nani : From the crushing poverty of life as an outcast to United Hero

May 2007. Aurelio Pereira receives a phone call from Carlos Queiroz, his old friend and Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United. Something is troubling Queiroz.

He has arrived in Portugal with his chief executive David Gill to hold transfer talks over the latest winger to roll off Sporting Lisbon's production line and wants to be sure that United are making the right decision by paying £17million for Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha, otherwise known as Nani.

'Carlos was in a hotel in Lisbon,' recalls Pereira, the 64-year-old head of Sporting's scouting network who is revered in Portugal for unearthing stars like Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Futre and Ricardo Quaresma but rarely speaks publicly about his proteges.

Heavens above: Nani has grown into one of Manchester United's stars

'He wanted to know about Nani's mentality and if he could handle the pressure of playing for United.

'He didn't want to know if he had good feet. He knew all about that. He wanted to know about his personality, how he could cope with a different country and a different team.

'It was a big responsibility for Carlos because it was a 25m euro deal and he wanted to be absolutely sure. I calmed him and said that, yes, he was buying a complete player.'

Hours later United shake hands with Sporting on a deal to take the 20-year-old to Old Trafford, and the next chapter in Nani's remarkable life story begins.

The number 184 is daubed on the door in blue paint but the street, if you can call it that, has no name; just a dusty track that cuts through the long grass to the place where Nani was raised in Santa Filomena, a shanty town built on the hillside overlooking Amadora northwest of Lisbon.

Thirty per cent of people between the ages of 15 and 30 who live here have a criminal record. It is unwise to pay a visit unless you are in the company of a local like Alcides Mendes, the founder and president of Espaco Jovem, the youth association that helped keep Nani away from crime after he was separated from his parents who had brought him from the African islands of Cape Verde at an early age.

His father Domingos returned there on holiday when Nani was seven and didn't come back. His mother Maria do Ceu left Portugal for Holland when he was 12, although by then the youngest of their 10 children had already chosen to live here in Santa Filomena with his aunt Antonia and her family, often sleeping six to a room with his brother and cousins.

Head over heels: Nani shows off his 'flip-flop' goal celebration

Through the iron bars protecting the windows there is a clear view down to the railway tracks which Nani would follow on foot during the six-mile round trip to training with his first club Real Massama. Sometimes, if he was late, he would jump on the train and dodge the ticket collector. On the other hand, it is only a short two-minute walk to the concrete five-a-side pitch in the middle of Santa Filomena where he mastered the art of street football.

'That's the big market for us,' says Pereira. 'The African kids from these quarters like Nani. Even now you can see how he mixes the high level of performance with the tricks of the street.'

Where Nani was raised: The village of Santa Filomena in Portugal

It was here that Nani learned how to become two-footed, a quality he has used to devastating effect coming in off the right wing for United.

'I'd stay for hours on that ring and kick with my left and right foot,' he says. 'I wanted badly to play as well with my left as I played with the right.'

Of the 80 poor kids in Santa Filomena, Mendes remembers that Nani was the 'only one who didn't stop chasing his dream'.

'He would choose the weaker players for his side in order to always have the ball,' says Mendes. 'It was five-a-side, winner stays on, and every time he lost he would be sick. He was totally focussed on winning. He just wanted to be out there playing, nothing else.

'It was very hard for the kids to know the world outside this place. The problem here is that most of the people are not immigrants but they're not Portuguese either.

Tricky feet: In action for Sporting in 2007

'They were born here but their parents are from the former African colonies like Cape Verde, so they are outcasts in society (Nani did not become a Portuguese citizen until the age of 18). Even in school they create separate classes for them.

'Nani's was a small house but the family were close and there was a great relationship between the cousins.

'His older brother was very important for Nani. He used to work in construction and sometimes Nani would go with him to help at work. He developed this strong feeling of family even though they were poor. It was a home.'

In spite of the hardship, Nani has happy memories of his upbringing. His other favourite pastime with the association was capoeira, a combination of Brazilian martial art and music. The trademark somersaults that follow each of his goals were a common sight on the streets of Santa Filomena.

'My friends said I was nuts but I wanted to keep something from capoeira and that's why I always celebrate with a flip-flop,' said Nani in a television interview in Portugal this week. 'People would always talk about that kid Nani (his sister gave him the name), the one with the curly hair.

'Life was tough but joyful. The only problem was hunger. We had not very good conditions at home, not much food. And it was my brother Paulo who'd sometimes bring food home, like cookies.

Unveiling: Fergie shelled out £17m to buy Nani from the Portuguese giants

'We would steal fruit and other stuff to eat. I went to some bad paths, but I would always return to the right one.

'You can't change or hide the past, and I'm not ashamed of the place I was born or the hard times I went through. If I reached where I wanted it was my effort and will, and it was worth it.'

Nani denies that his dad walked out on the family, insisting that red tape prevented him from returning to Portugal. The two men met up again in 2006 and Nani recalls: 'He tried to explain to me that he never abandoned me, but I just stopped the conversation and told him: "You don't need to. I'm cool. I'm happy, I know what happened, so you don't owe me any explanations".

'I didn't miss him so much because my brothers filled his role. They would give me all the support and love. I was the little boy, the protected, and nobody could touch me.'

Nani has not forgotten the times when he relied on Real Massama for food and his friends for clothes.

'I had lots of friends who helped me a lot and supported me because I had many difficulties,' he says. 'I couldn't afford expensive clothes so my colleagues would give me the trainers they weren't using anymore or their clothes. Sometimes they invited me to spend a week at their houses.

'I became a son of Massama. They gave me everything – boots and food. I had privileges that nobody else in the club had.'

Mentors: Real Massama's Luis Dias (left) and Aurelio Pereira (right)

Nani's mentor at the Second Division club, Luis Dias, admits that he could have joined Benfica instead of following his destiny to Sporting Lisbon and Old Trafford. Dias, now a youth coach at Sporting, was Nani's Under 11 coach when Massama were invited to play at the Stadium of Light by then Benfica boss Graeme Souness.

Talent spotter: With Carlos Queiros (right)

'It's true he was training with Benfica as well as Sporting,' says Dias. 'Benfica brought Massama to play in a big stadium in front of all the fans before a game against Boavista.

'But it was raining a lot that day and Souness said the kids couldn't play because they would destroy the grass. When you promise something to a player of that age you have to keep it. Benfica failed in their promise.

'They approached Nani all the time but he thought they didn't respect him. He didn't want to be a commodity. Although he was poor, Nani was very proud.'

Sensing the youngster's embarrassment at having to carry his boots in a plastic bag, Dias arranged for a senior player to donate a Lotto boot bag. It was all part of the special attention given to Nani.

'I had to be coach, psychologist, doctor, driver sometimes,' says Dias. 'I knew my job wasn't just training him. I also had to be a tutor, control what he was eating, how he was sleeping, go to the school and make sure he was going to classes. The things normally parents do.

'At Massama, he would have lunch before training and always have dinner afterwards. It was something we didn't do with the other kids. If he didn't eat at the club he probably wouldn't have eaten at all.'

It's half an hour's drive from Lisbon, south across the 11-mile Vasco da Gama Bridge and the mouth of the River Tagus, before you reach the countryside around Alcochete and the place where Nani polished his skills.

Even then, as you pass by the fields of cattle and sobreiro trees that produce Portugal's cork, there is a only a small orange road sign to indicate the final turn to the Academia do Sporting Clube de Portugal.

It is almost 10 years since Sporting built this complex, complete with seven pitches and a hotel for 50 of the 130 youngsters who train here. It costs £4m-a-year to run but Diogo Matos, the academy's director, estimates that it has already made the club £150m in terms of money saved on signing new players and the sale of star pupils like Nani and Ronaldo.

Room-mates: Nani lived at Cristiano Ronaldo's house

'We have something special going on here,' says Matos, whose current crop of Under 19s are emerging as one of the best in Europe in the much-lauded NextGen Series.

In the gym, Nani's personal best of 63 runs, covering 2,520metres, in the dreaded 'bleep test' is listed at seventh on the all-time leaders' board.

Although it was decided to keep him at Massama because of his domestic situation, he trained regularly with Sporting before joining the club at the age of 16. Nani earned £900-a-month here as an academy player but that rose to £10,000 when he signed as a professional.

The money helped to move his aunt Antonia out of Santa Filomena, and he continues to support his family financially now that he earns considerably more at United. It is a burden Nani gladly takes on but one, he admits, that has often interfered with his career in the Premier League.

Talent factory: Diogo Matos runs Sporting Lisbon's academy

'I thank God for my current situation and I'm a pillar to my family,' he says. 'Every time there is a problem they come to me and I never say no. I know what I've been through when I was younger. I just can't see someone from the family having difficulties.

'But personal problems make me lose my focus. Sometimes I'm mentally tired of it all. It might even be before a big match or a derby, but I will pick up the phone and call whoever it takes to solve the problem right away.

'I earn a lot of money but it didn't fall from the sky. I must run. When I don't play well, people will chase me. I'm the bad guy.'

Life in England has not been easy for Nani. It took a while to win over the fans and emerge from Ronaldo's shadow at United. Indeed, there have been times when Queiroz's initial concerns seemed justified.

Even after leading the Premier League in assists last season, he found himself on the bench for the Champions League Final against Barcelona, and the arrival of England winger Ashley Young in the summer prompted speculation that the 24-year-old could be on his way out of Old Trafford.

In fact, Nani has arguably been United's best player this season. He is happier off the pitch as well in the Cheshire home he shares with partner Daniela and their two dogs (a Labrador and a Chow Chow).

It's in contrast to his traumatic introduction to Manchester, even though Ronaldo was already there to help his friend adapt to the new surroundings.

Turning point: Nani's show at Arsenal in 2010 has been seen as a watershed

'The toughest part was to live alone, not speaking the language,' says Nani. 'There was a phase when I was living at Cristiano's house and it was very good. There were always cheerful people and we had everything – swimming pool, jacuzzi, tennis, ping-pong. I never missed my family.

'But later I had to leave Cristiano's to make my own life. It was hard because it was a big house and by night it seemed like a witch's house.

'I was even afraid of being home alone. Sometimes I didn't even leave the room. I went to bed early without eating properly because I didn't want to have dinner alone.'

Even now, Nani admits, he will not watch horror movies because it gives him sleepless nights. He prefers to follow the TV soap operas with Daniela and play the piano.

'It relaxes me a lot,' he says. 'And it's good to practise your concentration.'

October 2011. Porto's Estadio Do Dragao. Nani scores Portugal's first two goals in a 5-3 win over Iceland, upstaging his teammate Ronaldo. The next day's front pages of Correio da Manha and A Bola carry photos of him celebrating.

Defeat in Denmark four days later leaves Paulo Bento's team needing to qualify for Euro 2012 through a playoff, but it is clear that his No 17 – a player Bento coached at both junior and senior level at Sporting – has become a star in his own right.

Screamer: Nani scored two goals for his national side against Iceland last week

On Saturday Nani returns to Liverpool with unhappy memories. It was at Anfield in March that he was carried off in tears after a tackle from Jamie Carragher cut the United player's left shin to the bone.

Nani later claimed that it was the fear of missing the rest of the season, of not being able to play the game he loves, that made him cry rather than the injury itself.

United hero: Nani bagged the winner over rivals City in the Community Shield

'I know how hard it was for me to get here,' he says. 'I will keep fighting to go as high as I can. I will give my best to show that there is someone who fights in the name of the family.'

The boy from Santa Filomena has come a long way.

Liverpool - United : The Bloody Red Rivalry

Charles Darwin once prophesized that the struggle for supremacy is and will always remain a vital part of human evolution. Well, it is no different in the North-West region of England. If there’s any fixture that can get as fierce and feisty as La Liga’s El Classico, it’s the North West Derby. Two clubs that define English football, two clubs that have completely dominated the history of English football, go head-to-head in a gripping clash at Anfield. A rivalry of the ideologies, economies, cultures and pretty much everything that separates the two cities. A rivalry so intense that players and managers, alike, get goosebumps by the mere mention of it. A fixture where heroes are made, a fixture where one mistake makes you the villain in the eyes of your own fans. Let’s rewind back in time, highlighting some of the historic moments that shaped the rivalry.

The root of all the hatred
Believe it or not, it was the industrial revolution (YES, that’s right) that ignited the fire of the hatred that know burns brightly in the heart of every Scouser and Manc. During this time, both were competing with each other for supremacy of the north-west, with Manchester famous for its manufacturing prowess while Liverpool was famous for the importance of its port. Once the Manchester Ship Canal was built, ships could bypass Liverpool and transport goods directly into Manchester. The Ship Canal was an audacious project and upon completion in 1894 it was the longest man-made ship canal in the world. The Ship Canal meant less dues for Liverpool merchants which consequently resulted in job losses at the Port and resentment from the local people of Liverpool. Furthermore, the crest of Manchester United includes a ship representing the Manchester Ship Canal and reflects Manchester's trade roots. Fascinating.

Football adds the fuel to the fire
The best way to test the real extent of human friendship- pit them against each other on a football pitch. With the title of “The Greatest English Football Club” at stake, the already existent foe-lationship got even fiercer. The domination of English football can be represented by a sinusoidal wave, with Liverpool dominating the scene in the 1970s and 1980s winning the league 11 times and the European Cup 4 times. Manchester United’s period of domination began with the introduction of a certain Sir Alex Ferguson in 1986 and has continued till now. Since then, they have won the league title a record twelve times, a European Continental treble (European Cup, the Premiership and the FA Cup) in 1999, two domestic doubles and The European Double of the Premier League and European Cup in 2008.

The teams have met in four major cup finals; the FA Cup in 1977 and 1996, and the League Cup in 1983 and 2003. Both the clubs have shared the spoils, with United winning both FA Cup final meetings in pulsating encounters, and Liverpool coming out on top in the League Cup meetings.

Public Display of Emotions
The players and managers of both teams definitely do not have the word diplomacy in their dictionaries. Their emotions which include, mostly bitterness and despicableness, come out in all forms, be it chants, quotes, banners or gestures.

With Manchester United winning a record-breaking 19th title this season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous comment comes to mind
“My greatest challenge is not what’s happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their f**king perch. And you can print that.”

In 1994, after a thrilling 3-3 encounter between the two, the Kop unfurled a banner that read "Au revoir Cantona, come back when you've got 18 titles". United fans did not forget this. 15 years later, when United equaled Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles, they travelled to Anfield with Cantona masks and beach balls (Mocking the infamous beach ball goal Liverpool conceded against Sunderland)

Wayne Rooney, being an Everton Youth Academy product, hasn’t refrained from publicly expressing his hatred for the red half of the Merseyside .

Liverpool’s very own Mr.Liverpool, Steven Gerrard, in one of the documentaries, pointed out that that there were no Manchester United shirts in his collection and that he would never have one of them in his house. Gerrard wrote in his autobiography– “during 90 minutes of football, I want United to die.”

It got really ugly at times too.
Kop fans openly mocked the Munich air tragedy in their chant:“Who's that lying on the ruuunway? Who's that lying in the snow? It's Matt Busby and the boys, making all the fucking noise, cause they couldn't get the aeroplane to go! “

United fans decided to take revenge with their own chant ridiculing the Hillsborough tragedy:

“Who's that choking on their vomit? Who's that turning fucking blue? It's a scouser and his mate, crushed behind the Hillsborough gates, and they won't be singing Munich anymore!”

In 2006, when a late Rio Ferdinand header gave United a bitter victory over their rivals, Gary Neville celebrated by kissing the United badge right in front of the Kop fans and shouting profanities at them. While Jamie Carragher publicly criticized Neville’s actions and claimed that he ‘crossed the line’, United fans regarded this as an act of loyalty and sang to the tune of ‘London Bridge is falling down’:

“Gary Neville is a red, is a red, is a red. Gary Neville is a red. He hates Scousers!”

The 30-mile journey that can’t be made

The rivalry is so intense that there has been no direct transfer between the two clubs since Phil Chisnell, who joined Liverpool from United way back in 1964. In 2007, Liverpool approached United with a bid for Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze and the player had publicly opened the doors for the move. The fans regarded this as an insult to the club and Heinze became a target of hatred. Sir Alex blocked the move and the Argentine was eventually sold to Real Madrid.

The two clubs have arguably the most overwhelming fan-base across the globe , which makes the rivalry global, so it won’t be surprising if you see an Asian United fan and an African Kop fan arguing away to glory. The passion the fans have for their club, it freaks some people out. They take the insults and criticisms personally. Two of my friends are Liverpool supporters and we manage to remain at peace thanks to an agreement which bans all forms of banter. :D

Why we don't call our club as MANU!

Man .U. is not a term United fans refer to themselves as. The term is only used by other supporters as a complete and utter insult to our club. The "u" is meant to be "you" by the rival fans.

An early example of its usage is this chant by West Brom fans: "Duncan Edwards is manure, rotting in his grave, man you are manure- rotting in your grave". The origin of "Man .u." is a song to insult the dead Duncan Edwards.

Liverpool and Leeds fans copied this with their own man you /u versions to insult all of the lads who died at munich.

"Man .U. Man .U. went on a plane Man .U. Man .U. never came back again"

and..

"Man .U. Never Intended Coming Home" (if you combine the first letter of each word you get the word "munich").

I hope this makes it clearer that saying man .u. is an insult, particularly to the older supporters and to see United fans using it now is shameful. I hope a few might read this, understand and spread the word.

R.I.P! :(

what a terrible week it has been! first the bombing at Delhi High Court which left 11 dead and 76 injured. The blast was soon followed by a 6.6 magnitude earth quake!
as i woke up on 8th, September the day after my birthday, i was left stunned when i heard that a plane carrying Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team crashed near the banks of Volga, killing the entire squad leaving behind Alexander Galimov as a sole survivor of the horrible crash. Galimov is in a critical position after suffering 90 % burns.
Remains of the plane that carried Lokomotiv's squad near the banks of Volga

Well, this incident brings back the memories of Munich 1958, where United's famed "Busby Babes" met with a similar fate, when the flight carrying the players couldn't take off properly off an icy Munich air strip. As soon as the news of Yaroslavl Crash reached United, Old Trafford chief execeutive  David Gill offered his solidarity to the families of the lost ones and United have written to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to offer support and sympathy to the club!

RIP to the players and staff who have lost their lives in this tragedy!

PAUL SCHOLES, 17 years and still a LEGEND

Not many know that the foundations of United were laid upon their youth academy. The class of 92' Scholes,Giggs,Beckham,Butt,Neville brothers graduated from the academy, Messi was still in his diapers, Federer didn't even know how to play a backhand, Schumacher was still struggling to win his first race in Formula-1.

Paul Scholes, a man who was one of the best midfielders ever to don the shirt for Manchester United. being bought up in salford, he was excellent in cricket as well as football, but later opted to join the youth team of United.

He was a part of the famous team that won the youth cup, where he played alongside future team mates giggs, beckham, phil neville and gary neville. It was in 1993 that Scholes turned a professional. Oppurtunities at United were hard to come until Mark Hughes made a move to Chelsea in 95-96 season. During this season, Scholes got many oppurtunities and was mainly played as an attacking midfielder. After Roy Keane suffered an injury in 1997, Scholesy was deployed as a central midfielder, a role he excelled to greatest degree.

Scholes was an important member inThe Treble winning squad,98-99. He scored an important goal against Internazionale in UCL quaterfinals. He was bought in as a substitute in the second half during the semi final match against Juventus in which he was booked and eventually missed the final which United defeated Bayern Munich 2-1.

During the summer of 2001, when United signed Veron from Lazio, Scholes was reassigned as a withdrawn striker, just behind Ruud Van Nistelroy. Finally his thirst for UCL glory ended when United defeated Chelsea 6-5 on penalities at Luzhinski Stadium,Mosckow.  On April 22,2009 he went on to make his 600 appearance for United against Portsmouth.

He finallt bought down curtains over a glittering career in which he won 10 BPL titles, 3 FA cups and 2 Champions League titles. On August 5,2011 a testimonial was arranged at Old Trafford against New York Cosmos, in which he captained United for one last time. He opened the scoring with a 25 yard scorcher and finally called it a day. A TRUE RED DEVIL.!!

Summer of 2011

In a month or two the transfer window will open and we would welcome another new season of some exciting football for the year 2011-12. Firstly this transfer window which opens effectively from June 1 and closes on midnight of august 31. Well there a few clubs who would try their luck getting players who would match their profile and their style of play.

Starting with Barclays Premier League, recent years in BPL has seen the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City splashing money on several high profile players.

So lets get down to my club Manchester United first. United with the backing of Glazers who reportedly sanctioned Sir Alex Ferguson a war chest of 100 million pounds to dig deep into the summer signings, this looks like a sign that the headlines in the newspapers would be dominated by the red devils.

Firstly they need a good goalkeeper who has skills to replace the retiring Van Der Sar. Well it would be quite a burden for the incoming keeper to replace a legend like Van Der Sar, considering the fact that he has won so many titles for united even at the age of 38 when he famously stopped Anelka's penalty to give United their second CL title. well the players who are monitored for this role are Manuel Neuer , David De Gea, Gigi Buffon and Hugo Lloris. From my point of view going for Gigi is a waste of money as hes a shadow of his former self, plagued by injuries and loss of form and also keeping the age factor in consideration , gigi would not be a wise choice to fill the shoes of Van Der Sar. David De Gea got both age and experience on his side and he is already touted as a possible replacement for Iker Casilas in the spain national team.

Secondly they need a good centre halves, one who is a good defender as well as well composed. Vidic and Ferdinand are the obvious starters for the first team but they need to get some young talent like Steve Taylor, Rafael Toloi or even Giorgio Chiellini.

Coming to the midfield, they need to sign players of high quality like Javier Pastore, Paulo Henrique Ganso, Marek Hamsik and Jack Rodwell. They need to buy a couple of players to replace the aging duo of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

United have one of the best forwards in the world with the likes of Rooney, Berbatov and Chicharito. It would be wise if United can land either Alexis Sanchez who is one the brightest stars in Serie A or Edin Hazard who has catapulted to fame thanks to his performances at Lille.

Coming to Chelsea, the club i hate the most :P this time we may expect a summer clearance with the likes of Zhirkov,Drogba,Bosingwa,Anelka leaving stamford bridge and the likes of players like pastore, hamsik coming to replace them.
Arsenal need to sign a top class goalkeeper from the above mentioned list but Igor Akinfeev looks like the best bet for the gunners. He's got class and skills as well as playing for CSKA Moskow and Russia, he would be an ideal keeper for the gunners.
Liverpool are continuing their resurgence in BPL thanks to the surprise signings of Suarez and Carrol. A liverpool fan would be delighted if they can get couple of good players in summer and the fate of Alberto Aquillani is still undecided. The decisive factor for Liverpool to get some good players in  summer would be whether they can offer European football next season or not. Afellay seems to be courted by both Arsenal and Liverpool and hes ready to move to one them if barca doesnt offer him first team football next season.
Coming to the case of Totenham, "make hay when the sun shine" as the proverb says, Spurs must sell Bale for a reasonable price in summer so that they can go into the market to fund their own transfers.

In Bundesliga, Bayern have sacked their coach Van Gaal, and the entire team is in mess following a disappointing season where they will finish with an empty cabinet, a summer overhaul is on the cards. the areas of concern would be defense and the midfield for the bavarian giants.
Schalke are enjoying their best football ever, UCL semifinals for the first time in their history, although winning the tournament is the only way they can ensure that they will return to europe next season. With the legendary RAUL leading their attack up front, they are a force to beckon with. it will be interesting to see if they can hold on to their captain who is the subject to a move to either arsenal or united.

coming to La Liga, its pretty straight, Barca and Real Madrid are fighting to sign Cesc, and in recent weeks CR was subject to speculation linking him to a move to italy. It would be interesting to see how Valencia would play in the transfer market provided they lose two of their best wingers, Mata and Pablo Hernandez.

last but not the least, Serie A, Milan would like to sign Ibra on full time basis for 24 million euros, while Inter are plotting a raid over Machester City for Tevez. Juventus on other hand have been in crisis where nothing has worked out, and the much awaited signing of Krasic turned out to be a disaster for the club. Nedved who is a director at Juventus is insisting on an overhaul and the players most likely approached by Juventus in summer would be Arshavin, Bosingwa and Bastos. Roma on other hand would probably monitor the market and go for players who have the capability to replace a legend like Totti.

THE WELSH WIZARD

Ryan Giggs aka GIGGSY is once in a generation footballer ever to play for manchester united over the past two decades. having come to england from wales at a tender age of 6 years and he joined Deans FC. Meanwhile, Giggs continued to play for Salford Boys, who went on to reach the final of the Granada Schools Cup competition at Anfield in 1987. Giggs captained the Salford team to victory over their Blackburn counterparts, and the trophy was presented to him by Liverpool chief scout Ron Yeats. Yeats was impressed by Giggs's performance, and would have recommended him to Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, had Giggs not already been picked up by Manchester United.

Giggs turned professional on 29 November 1990 (his 17th birthday), by which time he was described by various sources to be the finest prospect in English football since George Best in the 1960s. He made his league debut against Everton at Old Trafford on 2 March 1991 as a 17 year old replacing Dennis Irwin as a full back. He became a first-team regular early in the 1991–92 season, yet remained active with the youth system and captained the team, made up of many of "Fergie's Fledglings", to an FA Youth Cup triumph in 1992. Giggs broke into the first team even though he was still aged only 17, a mark of his skill and maturity, and paved the way as the first of many Manchester United youth players to rise into the first team under Ferguson. As the youngest member of the United first team squad, Giggs looked to the older players such as Bryan Robson for advice.

The start of 1992-93 season in which the first division was rechristened as Premier League, giggs was the automatic first choice winger available to Sir Alex. Giggs, as the leader of this new revival of pacy and stylish football after the traditional years of long ball and route one styles of previous decades, played a key role in reshaping English football,[14] and helped United to its first top division title win for 26 years, though they didn't go top until after Christmas and fought off competition from big spending Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers as well as surprise title contenders Norwich City. His emergence and the arrival of Eric Cantona heralded the dominance of United in the new league. His manager was very protective of him, refusing to allow Giggs to be interviewed until he turned 20. This was a testament to his skill and maturity which he got at a very tender age.

The season of 93-94 was the beginning of the ERA OF FERGIE-FLEDGELINGS. the so called group of youngsters who graduated from the United's youth academy. Among the academy graduates, future stars David Beckham, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt emerged and thus the era of United's domination began which signaled the end of a trophy drought at Old Trafford.

Giggs proved to be a great goalscorer, many of his memorable goals being shortlisted for various Goal of the Season awards. Widely regarded as among his best were those against Queens Park Rangers in 1993, Tottenham in 1994, Everton in 1995, Coventry in 1996, and the most remarkable of all, his solo-goal against Arsenal in the replay of the 1999 FA Cupsemi-final. During extra time, Giggs picked up possession after Patrick Vieira gave the ball away, then ran from the half-way line, dribbled past the whole Arsenal back line, includingTony Adams, Lee Dixon and Martin Keown before launching his left-footed strike just under David Seaman's bar and beyond his reach. He famously whipped off his shirt as he ran to celebrate with his teammates. This was one the best goals ever scored in FA cup and Ryan Giggs single handedly won the match for United.

The year of 1999 would be a year that Giggs would remember for his entire life. First the famous FA Cup semifinal victory over old foes Arsenal, secondly winning the premier league title on the final day of the season, pipping arsenal by a mere 1 point and thirdly the famous Champions League Final at Nou Camp where he helped United overturn a 1-0 deficit into a winning margin of 2-1 in which he set up the goal which teddy sheringham scored to equalize and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored on the last kick of the game to complete the treble. it was indeed a great moment for Giggs who was named man of the match and United later went on to win the Intercontinental Cup beating brazilian side Palmeiras.

Giggs became the longest serving player at United after Dennis Irwin left in 2002, Giggs was barely in his twenties that time. He celebrated his decade of being a united player with a testimonial match against Celtic FC at the start of the 2001-02 season.

Few of the his personal achievements;

1. Giggs scored his 100th league goal for United against Derby County on 8 December 2007, which United won 4–1.
2. On 20 February 2008 he made his 100th appearance in the UEFA Champions League in a game against Lyon
3. On 11 May 2008 he came on as a substitute for Park Ji-Sung to equal Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 758 appearances for United. Giggs scored the second goal in that match, sealing his, and United's, tenth Premier League title.
4.Ten days later, on 21 May 2008, Giggs broke Bobby Charlton's appearance record for United when coming on as an 87th minute substitute for Paul Scholes in the Champions League Final againstChelsea. United would go on to win the Final, defeating Chelsea 6–5 on penalties after a 1–1 draw after extra time. Giggs converted what became the winning penalty in sudden-death for United and joined Steve McManaman and team-mate Owen Hargreaves in becoming the only British players to have played in and won more than one Champions League final.
5. On the 6th of March 2011, Giggs surpassed the Manchester United league appearance record of Bobby Charlton by playing his 607th game against Liverpool.

On 16 August, 2010 Giggs scored against Newcastle which ensure that he became the first and the only player who has scored in every Premier League Season ever since its inception. Giggs signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United on 18 February, keeping him at the club until June 2012.

Ryan Giggs is a player who understands the finer details of the game and is rarely carried off by the emotions. The fact that he was never sent off in a United Shirt is just a testament to his emotional strength. In recent years, Giggs has become a UNICEF representative, launching a campaign in 2002 to prevent landmines from killing children. He is half way through his UEFA "A" coaching license which would help him take the helm at United or Wales some time in the near Future.

"Ryan makes you believe there is a football God" - Rowan Atkinson
this is just a testimony to a club legend like Giggs who is up there among the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Eric Cantona and co.

BLEED BLUE:

25 june, 1983 Kapil Dev and his team fondly remembered as "KAPIL's DEVILS" lifted the World Cup at Lords. after 28 long years SRT and co do it again big tym!! it was really the moment of my life seeing Sachin lift the trophy infront of his fans in his hometown MUMBAI.!!

I couldn't have asked for anything more than this. Winning the World Cup is the proudest moment of my life. Thanks to my team-mates. Without them, nothing would have happened. I couldn't control my tears of joy."
Sachin Tendulkar, who's played six World Cups, on his best moment

"I took a quite few decisions tonight, if we hadn't won I would have been asked quite a few questions: Why no Ashwin, why Sreesanth, why no Yuvraj, why did I bat ahead?! That pushed me and motivated to do well"
MS Dhoni puts a light spin on his selection decisions ahead of India's title win

"This is unbelievable. The Under-19 World Cup, then the World Twenty20 but this is the most special. For Sachin, for everyone else."
Yuvraj Singh, the Player of the Tournament, sums it up

"Very proud of everyone, especially Mahela who rose up to the occasion and put up a great hundred. When you look at this Indian team anything less than 350 looks less! They deserved this title, the way they played in front of a great crowd."
Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, is gracious in defeat

"All credit goes to Sachin Tendulkar. We played for him. Beating Australia and Pakistan and now this, its a dream come true."

Gautam Gambhir, who gave India the upper hand in the final with his 97

"It means the world to me. I have been part of the three World Cups. This is for the nation. Thank you very much, we love you. This cup is for the people. Love you India!"
Harbhajan Singh was among several Indian players who shed a tear following India's victory

"This goes out to all the people of India. This is my first World Cup; I can't ask for more. Tendulkar has carried the burden of nation for 21 years; It was time we carried him. Chak de India!"

The History of the sev"7"ens of United

well every team has its own stars. but united got its best players wearing the fabled jersey no 7. It all started with George Best, an Irish legend who played most of his career at Old Trafford. He was a winger who was well known for his  pace, agility, goalscoring form and the ability to out smart the defenders. Like any other player he gained fame and reputation at very young age and eventually succumbed to drugs and alcohol. He died at an age of 59 due to multiple organ failure.

After George Best left United, United management couldn't find a proper heir to the crown vacated by Best. In the winter of 1992 there came a ray of hope for United fans in form of  ERIC "The King" CANTONA. he joined United from their arch rivals Leeds United and costed red devils 1.2 million pounds. In his first season with united he had little success helping United win the inaugural premier league and helped them become the champions of England after 35 long years. Eric Cantona followed the footsteps of his predecessor and got into an ugly situation with one of the supporters of Crystal Palace which resulted him being suspended for 8 long months. After couple of seasons THE KING decided to abdicate his throne. many fans were shocked with the premature retirement. Another glorius chapter comes to an END.

It was a master stroke from Sir Alex by handing the NO 7 jersey to none other than DAVID BECKHAM. he was one of the youth products of the famous youth academy that Sir Alex Ferguson has set up. Speaking of david beckham, one famous incident that elevated him into being a fan favourite. yeah the super goal he scored  against wimbledon made him a house hold name. As time passed on, Becks as he fondly called; established himself as one of the best right sided mid fielders that United has ever produced. He's remembered as a dead ball specialist and is a deadly crosser of the ball. After years of his undoubted service to the club, the fateful event occurred. during a cup defeat, Sir Alex kicked a boot which struck beckham's eye and needed several stitches. Finally in the summer of 2003 beckham was sold to Real Madrid for 35 million euros. A part of that money was used to lure Christiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon and the youngster looked well capable to take over the jersey.

In comes Christiano Ronaldo aka CR aka Ronny, hes arguably the best thing that ever happened to United. Ever since his arrival he tried to win over United Folk by displaying abundant energy and having bag full of tricks. He slowly developed into becoming a world class player at old trafford majorly due to the phenominal goal scoring record of 42 goals in a single season in which united went on to win the champions league after 9 long seasons. He was touted to be a better player than George Best himself. But all the praise and awards fel short when he was transferred suddenly to Real Madrid for a world record fee of 80 million pounds. the move itself drew wide spread criticism regarding the over spending prowess of Real Madrid and the life style of Ronaldo. Yet another star makes his exit at Old Trafford and leaves with a sigh of hope that the next Player to don that shirt would be better than the predecessor.

Signing off!

"RED DEVILS"

football has always been a fascinating game for me ever since i was 9.My first ever football match happened to be a champions league final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich. As the match progressed i got attracted to the United play and even witnessed one of the best moments in my life when teddy sheringham and Ole gunnar Solskjaer score at CAMP NOU and the entire crowd estimated around 90000 were swept into frenzy..!!
From that day i have followed Manchester United and i can proudly say that its my boyhood club :) ever since then i had this desire to go to OLD TRAFFORD witness the "RED DEVILS" in action.
its been wonderful 11 years since that memorable finale '99 and i never regretted in my decision of supporting UNITED. perhaps football runs in my veins and united in my heart.. ;)
11 glorious seasons in which i have seen United rise into the ranks of a major European club. i have grown watching my idol RYAN GIGGS score some spectacular goals for united and helping them in dominating the  centre stage. maybe i can attribute the fact that i have inculcated some desirable traits from the man himself :)
i am "UNITED BORN AND BRED"
